Description of tiny red spider mites

What could be more irritating and bothersome than dealing with unwanted red spider mites destroying your plants? But now it’s time to destroy these red mites.

Red spider mites on plantsLittle red spider mites are wingless, crawling plant pests with 6 legs (juvenile mites) or 8 legs (adult mite). There are 2 types of crawling tiny red spider mites.

These types are:

  • Chiggers,
  • Clover mites.

The first type of mites is known for itching bug bites. When it comes to the second type – clover mites, they don’t bite but can invade homes. These small devils like warm weather. Late fall and early spring are two periods between which they will invade homes. They can cover furniture, the floors, get into clothing and beds and are a big problem.

To control clover mites and prevent them from coming into your house, caulk holes around windows and doors.
Using pump insecticide formulations and household aerosols containing bifenthrin, permethrin and diazinon is a good idea.

Clover spider mites can be found on shrubs, flowers, grasses, trees and agricultural crops.

Living in grass, tiny red spider mites became unnoticed. But when population of mites get large, red spider mites start to migrate and can enter houses through doors and windows.

Are they red?

When people check their plants for mites’ infestation they usually want to see what type of mites infest their plants. Most of them think that red spider mites must be red. NOT ALWAYS.

These pests will be red in the springtime or after hibernation. Some of them can be yellow, green and even orange.

Types of red spider mites

There are European and Southern tiny red spider mites. The first type of mites prefers fruit trees, especially apples. When it comes to the second type of mites, you can find them on many plants. No matter what type of mites you have in your garden, if they are on your property, you will have a big problem.

Red spider mites are inactive in winter.

Due to their resistance to pesticides, red spider mites become very difficult to control.

Symptoms of plants damage caused by red spider mites are:

  • Discoloration of leaves,
  • Speckled appearance of plants,
  • Brownish and bronze colors of leaves.

Step 2. Prevention

Preventation of mitesPreventative treatment is the best way to start red spider mites’ elimination.

Purchase Red Spider Mite Stop by Syngentea. This (10 sachets) preventative treatment contains Amblyseius Andersonii breeding colony.

Sachets should be placed in the green houses when the temperature is 10 °C.

Fungal spores, pollen and plant sap are sources of food for which Amblyseius will search out if there are no spider mites on your plants.

The best way to place sachets is when the plants start growing. Approximately 250 predators will be released from each sachet on your plants during 6-8 weeks. They will feed on mites giving you a great opportunity to control destructive red spider mites without using harmful pesticides.

Step 3. Control red spider mites using this plan

SB InvigoratorWhat to do first: Use non-toxic and bio-degradable SB Invigorator. Not only this natural spray will control red mites but it will also effectively reduce fungal diseases and help your damaged plants to recover from mites’ attack. Use this spray until it is warm enough (at 16 °C).

The product can be used on house plants, edible and ornamental crops. It is completely safe for kids and pets after application. You can purchase SB in ready to use format or as concentrate to mix yourself. It is recommended to spray SB for two weeks.

What to do next: After 2 weeks of SB Invigorator usage introduce the Phytoseiulus for long term red spider mite control. Phytoseiulus feeds on all red mites’ stages eating up to five adults per day.

Leaves spraying

25 eggs of RSM can be eaten by phytoseiulus for a day.

Help predators by spraying the underside of plant leaves with water. If possible, group infested plants together. This will help phyto to kill mites from plant to plant.

Step 4. Use effective sprays for the best result

The first thing most people use, when they want to eliminate mites, is pesticides. But when it comes to red spider mites, pesticides are often ineffective.

Be careful when using pesticides. Some farmers use pesticides to eliminate tiny red mites.

  • The problem is these pesticides also kill natural predators of mites which cause increase of mites’ population.
  • The second problem is that red spider mites have resistance to most pesticides and can simply move to non-treated areas.

The best way to control them is by using natural, chemical-free products that will not be harmful for other beneficial insects.
